1651, Cast a Bell

(2001) Beautiful Jo records  BEJOCD-33

We are undoubtedly in the presence of an extraordinary work: Mark Emerson, a brilliant old friend of Pywackett, retrieves a repertoire of 1651 with the collaboration of  the accordeonist Andy Cutting and  of thejazz bassist Tim Harries. The footage they brought is almost entirely from the volume English Playford's Dancing Master (with the exception of "Under Alder”). It’s a repertoire from anonymous and mysterious origin, but extraordinarily fascinating for those shadows, dark improvised and energetic sounds that distinguish it. The CD, recorded by the usual Oliver Knight at Panda Studios, has intriguing graphics, designed by Denis Kennedy.
